In the early morning hours of Aug. 4, 1962, Marilyn phoned a friend, the actress Jeanne Carmen. “She said some woman had been calling her all night, harassing her (and telling her) ‘Leave Bobby alone, you tramp,'” Carmen recalled to Summers.

A Vanity Fair raccontò: “Ha detto che una donna l’ha chiamata tutta la notte, molestata e insultata” – raccontando come si sentisse fortemente angosciata da questo – “La voce suonava familiare, ma non riusciva a darle un nome. Nella speranza di contattare Bobby chiamò anche degli amici a Washington, inclusi Robert Slatzer e il cognato di Kennedy, Peter Lawford. Carmen also said that Monroe asked for sleeping pills and wine, but Carmen declined her request.
